“My sweet, sweet, Mary Claire,

There is a spark that ignites a type of love that is like no other when you have your first baby. From the moment I first held you I realized there was nothing that I loved more than you. Immediately myriad ideas, dreams, and expectations started to take shape as I thought about raising you and guiding you toward womanhood. Now as you approach your 12th birthday, not only do I love you more than words can say but I am so very proud of the person that you are and continue to grow into. You are independent, hard working, level headed and confident. Although you never seek attention, you still speak, play piano, act, dance and sing in front of large groups of people with confidence, poise and ease. Those qualities will most certainly serve you well. What I admire most about you is that you stay true to yourself. You embrace the characteristics that set you apart… your creamy, smooth, caramel skin, thick wavy hair, and deep ebony eyes rather than minimizing them. The latest fashion or fad has never been your focus and you never pretend that it is just to fit in. You appreciate and surround yourself with those people who adore you for you. But you never shun those who don’t. You simply put them in the appropriate place in your life and remain a great friend nonetheless. It took me several decades to learn and accept what seems to come natural to you. For that you have my enduring admiration.
